Gas Supplier Offers Amnesty To Thieves

The company providing domestic gas supplies in Belfast has offered an amnesty to customers its says are stealing gas.

But supplier Phoenix Natural Gas warned it would go after anyone who keeps tampering with meters.

Phoenix Gas says more then 1000 customers are tampering with the meters in their homes to avoid having to pay for supplies.

The company is working with councillors to highlight the dangers for those involved in tampering with electronic meters and says that as well as defrauding the company this creates a danger for the householder and the local community.

Although Phoenix has vowed that all involved in the racket will be detected, General Manager David Strahan urged them to come clean.

Phoenix says that if the people involved come forward and pay for the gas used, they will not be prosecuted.
