Councillors warn on drug dealers targeting schoolchildren

School principals in the Belfast area are to be warned that drug dealers are targeting pupils catching school buses around the City Hall.

At a meeting of Belfast City council on Monday evening it was revealed that police had told councillors about the activities on the council's doorstep.

A group set up to tackle drug abuse was informed that schoolchildren were being preyed on by drug dealers at bus stops and Belfast City Council is to write to all schools in the Belfast area to warn them of the danger.

East Belfast Alliance Councillor and Party Education Spokesperson, Naomi Long, raised the proposal to write to the schools passed at last night’s City Council meeting.

Cllr Long said: “After receiving complaints from constituents a few weeks ago, I contacted the PSNI about drug dealing to school children waiting for buses at City Hall. I am pleased with the pro-active stance that the police have taken on the issue.

“I hope that this decision to write to all school principals will further raise awareness of the dangers to children and prevent dealers offering drugs to young people at City Hall in the future. I am delighted that the Council has agreed to this proposal, which I hope will reduce the impact that unscrupulous drug dealers can have on Belfast children.”

The revelation at the meeting prompted calls from several councillors for this serious issue to be addressed without delay and security at City Hall is expected to be reviewed as a result.
