Riverside Park Bids For Lottery Cash

An initiative to open a linear, riverside park - rivalling the Lagan towpath - has been accepted for the final bidding in a National Lottery competition for grants.

With the aim of creating a park along the course of a river in east Belfast, the Connswater Community Greenway has made the final round and may soon be set to benefit from £23m lottery funding.

The project would involve creating a parkway following the course of the river and other waterways through east Belfast, connecting green spaces along the way.

A final decision on its bid will be taken in November, according to the lottery's Living Landmarks Fund.

Wendy Langham of East Belfast Partnership said they were delighted to be the only Northern Ireland entry to be short-listed for the fund.

"We've been working on this project with the lottery for two years now and this is the final stage now so we think we're in a good position and we think we've got a good chance of securing this money for Belfast” she explained.

The project organisers have come a long way already, being picked out of 300 competing projects, and will make a final presentation to the lottery fund on 6 November, before a decision in the middle of the month.

"We're hoping to put a 9km linear park from Castlereagh hills right through to Belfast Lough, linking east Belfast with the Titanic Quarter and the future opportunities there are there,” Wendy concluded.
