Screen Skills Talent Sought

A joint Northern Ireland TV and film training programme - Skills Focus, the UTV and Northern Ireland Screen training programme, is now open for applications following a successful launch last year.

The initiative gives five trainees the opportunity to gain experience in either production or technical skills during a four-month placement at UTV.

The initial training for the scheme will take place in August 2008 based at UTV. Twenty-five people will be chosen to participate in this training programme which will cover the fundamental aspects of television production such as compliance, rights and clearances, budgeting and scheduling, basic video production techniques, basic post-production techniques and health and safety.

The placements will then run from September 2008 until December 2008 at UTV.

Robert Lamrock, Channel Development Manager at UTV said: "I recommend this training opportunity to anyone wanting to pursue a career in television.

"Skills Focus is a great start which will 'fast track' successful applicants through UTV and hopefully lead to a position in the media."

Andrew Reid, Head of Production at Northern Ireland Screen said: "Skills Focus is a great opportunity for the five successful candidates to start their careers in television.

"Last year's participants have set a very high standard but with UTV's commitment, Northern Ireland Screen is sure that 2008 will be another great year for the scheme."

Ian Baxter, who participated in Skills Focus last year and is now working as a Researcher on UTV Life added: "Skills Focus is a unique opportunity to gain a foot in the door to the industry, with regular face to face contact with some of the industry's top professionals.

"Its comprehensive programme of real hands on training within a busy media environment provided me with experience that has proved invaluable," concluded Ian.
