Birthday Celebrations End In Hospital

A Belfast man who was on his way home after celebrating his birthday ended up in hospital instead.

He was attacked by a gang of men wielding baseball bats at around 11.30pm on Saturday at Coolfin Street, in south Belfast.

Four masked men set upon the victim and beat him with baseball bats as he was returning from a night out to celebrate his own 55th birthday.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where he is being treated for serious injuries to his head and body.

Members of the victim's family last night said they did not know why he had been attacked.

Meanwhile, a man aged in his early 40s remains in a critical condition in hospital after being attacked in a separate incident in south Belfast.

Shortly before 9.40pm on Friday, it was reported that a man had been assaulted by a group of people close to the junction of Sussex Place and Hamilton Street.

Police are currently questioning two men about the attack, which happened in the Markets area while the victim - 41-year-old taxi driver Jeremy Mooney from Bangor - remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Detectives investigating both assaults are keen for witnesses to contact them on 0845 600 8000.
