Pensioner Is Latest Assault Victim

A man in his 70s has fallen victim to an assault in north Belfast.

He was one of two men attacked in incidents in the early hours of this morning.

The pensioner was attacked first at around 5am on the Antrim Road, near Duncairn Gardens and five minutes later, a man in his 30s was assaulted when he prevented a man from entering his house at nearby Hartwell Place.

The attacker was reported to have fled in a Renault Megane, later found at Lepper Street.

The PSNI said that one man was arrested a short time later at Carlisle Parade.

Police also said there may have been a second man, however the exact circumstances of the incidents are still being established and have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

This was just the latest such assault as yesterday, the police were following up a violent attack in the centre of town in Londonderry.

A man was injured in the incident in which four men assaulted their victim in the early hours of the morning.

He sustained cuts and bruises to his face and hands during the incident, which happened on Derry's Bishop Street at about 3am on Wednesday.

Police have said they are investigating the possibility that the attack might have been sectarian and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them at Strand Road police station.
