NI Policing Bill Races Toward Assent
The Northern Ireland Office has confirmed that a vital part of the legislation "flowing from the agreement between Stormont's First and Deputy First Minister on the devolution of policing and justice" is set to become law at Westminster.
The Northern Ireland Bill, which hurriedly completed its passage through both houses of Parliament last night (Wednesday) with party unity, gives effect to recommendations from the Assembly and Executive Review Committee and provides a model for the new devolved justice department and new justice minister.
An NIO statement said that the Bill is expected to receive Royal Assent later today.
Secretary of State Shaun Woodward (pictured) commented: "I am grateful to all those at Westminster who took part in debates on the Bill. It is a matter of great significance that the Bill has passed unamended.
"It represents one more example of the unified support for the devolved administration and the huge political progress they have made and the maturity with which they have grappled with the issues for the future of Northern Ireland," he said.
