Blues Captain Now Charged Over Counterfeit Allegations
A top Northern Ireland footballer is today facing a possible eight year sentence in a Spanish jail.
It has emerged that the captain of Linfield football club, William 'Winkie' Murphy, has been charged with passing counterfeit bank notes in Spain.
Mr Murphy had now been formally accused of 'introducing counterfeit currency into Spain', an offence which carries a minimum jail term of eight years.
The player was arrested earlier this month, while visiting Torremolinos on a stag party with some team-mates.
The arrest related to an incident in Spain in 2007 when he was detained after allegedly passing the counterfeit notes.
After Mr Murphy was arrested in 2007 he returned home to Northern Ireland. It's not clear what undertakings he gave about returning to Spain.
Meanwhile, while 'Winkie' is being held on remand in Madrid, local soccer fans will be out in the bars in Belfast to watch TV coverage of tonight's Champions League final between Manchester United and top Spanish team, Barcelona in Rome.
