Boys Bailed Over Racism Trouble

Two teenage boys appeared before a magistrate this morning charged with causing trouble at an anti-racism rally in Belfast.

The pair, aged 15 and 16, were arrested in connection trouble which flared during a demonstration march against the intimidation of Romanians living in south Belfast.

Scores of immigrant families were forced to flee the area last week after sustained racist attacks and incidents of vandalism.

Both the accused face charges of provocative behaviour, likely to cause a breach of the peace against the anti-racism protest on the Lisburn Road.

The 15-year-old is also charged with intimidation against occupants of a house on Belgravia Avenue.

A lawyer for the 16-year-old said his client admitted being involved in the group but did not admit to being involved in any previous acts of intimidiation.

The boy was bailed and will reappear before the court next week.

Police bail was also granted to the second teenager, who will appear in court again on 20 July.

Neither of the teens were picked out in identification parades, the court heard.

The boys were arrested on Friday amid ongoing tensions in the city. They cannot be named by the media because they are minors.

Today a judge said he hoped that others involved would also be brought before the courts.

An inter-denominational service was held at Fitzroy Presbyterian Church, in south Belfast, last night.

The congregation sought to show solidarity with their foreign neighbours, who have now vacated the area.

Hundreds of demonstrators held a rally in Belfast city centre on Saturday to display their contempt for the racially-motivated attacks.

Housing Minister Margaret Ritchie has secured temporary accommodation for those families who fled their homes last Tuesday.
