Boy Drowns In Second River Tragedy
A 10-year-old boy has died in hospital after an accident in the River Bann, while a teenage girl has also drowned in Dublin
The boy, named today as Daniel Andre from Hilltown, was in the river (pictured) at Leitrim at around 5pm on Wednesday.
It is thought the child was under for the water for 20 minutes and was with friends when he first got into difficulty.
The emergency services were involved in a dramatic rescue and worked for some time to regain a pulse, after a firefighter used breathing apparatus to go under water to pull him to the bank.
A two car police escort then rushed the child in an ambulance to Daisy Hill Hospital, before he was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
However, the 10-year-old lost his fight for life on Thursday morning.
Daniel and friends had been enjoying the good weather but it is believed the youngster was unable to swim.
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Service said the child had fallen into the river and that the service had helped rescue him in conjunction with other emergency services.
In a second tragic Irish drowning, a 16-year-old girl died after getting trapped in the River Liffey in the Strawberry Beds area of Chapelizod, Dublin.
The teenage girl from Clonsilla was walking along the side of Wrens Nest Weir when she lost her footing and fell into the river. She became trapped under a large piece of wood.
Onlookers and firemen and gardaí who were called out tried to help her. She was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown but staff were unable to save the girl, and she was pronounced dead.
