Domestic Workers Employed By Foreign Diplomatic Staff To Receive Increased Protection
Domestic workers employed by foreign diplomatic staff will enjoy increased protection following the publication of new guidelines by the Department of Foreign Affairs.
As a guiding principle, diplomatic staff of embassies or consulates in Ireland who wish to employ private domestic workers are expected to demonstrate respect for Irish laws and good employment practice. The guidelines clearly set out the expectations regarding payment, employment records, health insurance, and social security.
The publication of the new guidelines follows a campaign by the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland highlighting the abuse of domestic staff by some foreign diplomats.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, said: "These new guidelines have been developed following a consultative and cooperative process involving other departments and State agencies, including the Departments of Justice and Equality and Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation; the National Employment Rights Authority (NERA) and An Garda Síochána. I also welcome the contribution of the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland to this process."

Woolwich Talks To Take Place In December
Talks to resolve the current dispute between GMB and ISS at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich are due to take place in December in the long running dispute over a two tier workforce. GMB members employed by ISS held two further days of solid strike action on Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th November. There was an earlier 24 hour strike on 8th October.

Jobs Threat As Coffee Republic Goes Into Administration
The coffee shop chain Coffee Republic has gone into administration following weeks of speculation about its future. The group has 187 outlets in total in the UK and overseas, with 153 directly-employed staff based at its London head office and 127 at 20 group-operated outlets.

One hundred jobs are at risk at a Belfast call centre, a union has claimed. Unite say that the jobs are under threat at Capita after Prudential did not renew a contract with the company. "The announcement affects 102 Capita staff of the 250 employed in Beacon House." according to a statement from Capita.

Down Contractor Cuts 35 Jobs
An established County Down building firm has axed 35 jobs at its Kilkeel base. RG Coulter has operated in the town for over 40 years, but of recent times, has fallen victim to the housing market slowdown. At its peak the firm employed around 300 staff, making it the largest employer in the area.
