UCATT Fear Employee Screening Could Lead To Blacklisting
Construction union UCATT have called for the postponement of a new employee screening scheme to ensure that it cannot be used to blacklist construction workers.
The National Federation of Builders (NFB) announced a tie up with outsourcing company Mitie to "provide employee screening, background checks and lone worker solutions to its members". The release says that the scheme will "ensure an employee and their history really is who and what they claim to be".
The scheme says it provides members with "basic and advance disclosure and barring checks".
Steve Murphy, General Secretary of UCATT, said: "On face value this scheme has the potential to lead to the blacklisting of construction workers. The scheme should be postponed until workers are fully reassured that blacklisting will not and cannot occur."
UCATT has written to the Chief Executive of the NFB seeking an urgent meeting regarding the scheme and asking for the scheme not to introduced in the interim.
The NFB are members of the Construction Industry Joint Council. The CIJC Working Rule Agreement, the largest agreement in the construction industry, has a clear anti-blacklisting rule which says: "The CIJC does not condone any form of blacklisting of any worker."
