'Poppy Day' Remembrance For Drogheda |
|
Former soldiers from both sides of the Irish border are to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in Co Louth this Remembrance weekend.
In a now annual event, the ex-service men and women will honour the World War fallen from the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland.
Among the guests will be a party from Whiteabbey Royal British Legion in Co Antrim - who helped pioneer the event a decade ago - along with representatives from across Northern Ireland.
Ex regular army and UDR soldiers - along with Shankill Road representatives and political figures from across NI - will mingle with members of the Irish Ex Servicemen's Association and Irish-based British Legion members at the war memorial in Drogheda's Mary Street.
Taking place on Saturday 7th November, at 11am, about 200 people are expected to attend the interdenominational service of praise and remembrance for those who died and were wounded.
As guests of the Drogheda Mayor, Michael O'Dowd, representatives will each lay wreaths to recall the men from all over the island of Ireland who were killed or wounded in the British army during WWI.
Traditional Royal British Legion Poppy wreaths will then sit side-by-side with the tricolour wreaths of the Organisation of National Exservicemen, (ONE) as the last post is sounded and the traditional two-minute silence observed.
