Ballykinler Counts Cost Of War

A Co Down army base is again in mourning this week after news of the latest fatality to hit the military.

One of the latest casualties of the war in Afghanistan is again from one of the hardest hit regiment, the Ballykinler-based battalion, The Rifles.

Hours before Remembrance Day was marked at the weekend, Rifleman Philip Allen - who was serving with A Company, 4th Battalion the Rifles - died in an explosion on Saturday.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the 20-year-old from Dorset was part of a platoon providing ground clearance and security to Afghans.

At the time of his death - after an improvised explosive device was detonated - he was working within a fire support group.

As the official date for commemorating the war dead looms - the 11th November - the 2nd Battalion returned to the Ballykinler base and hosted an emotional medals ceremony, having lost 13 soldiers during their recent tour of service, with many more seriously injured.

The battalion, based in the dangerous central Helmand province area of Sangin, found around 200 improvised explosive devices.
