School Kids 'Sample' Prison Life |
|
Hundreds of school children will be trying out life 'inside' this week when prison officers visit schools to warn against becoming involved in crime.
The students will 'be held captive' to take part in the Crime Days programme, which has been organised by Prison!Me!No!Way! Northern Ireland.
First up yesterday was Kilkeel High School, while two other schools will be accommodated later in the week.
These schools have been selected because of their excellent record on pastoral care and their desire to work with the statutory agencies to warn their pupils of the dangers of falling victim of a life of crime.
The Northern Ireland Co-ordinator of Prison!Me!No!Way! Colin McAllister said: "The Crime Days events are about appealing to young people to think before they act and encouraging them not to make choices that may well end up leading them to a life behind bars.
"Engaging with young people interactively has proven to be a very effective way about showing young people about the tough realities of prison life and what they stand to lose by getting involved in crime," he said.
"Every year we choose schools from different geographic parts of Northern Ireland in order to deliver our key messages to as wide an audience as possible," he continued.
"The schools that we have selected this week have been very positive in supporting their pupils, not just educationally but also with their life and decision-making skills."
The Crime Days programme consists of a series of five workshops exploring different aspects of offending behaviour.
