RTÉ Wins Coverage Of France Encounter |
|
The Irish state broadcaster, RTÉ has announced that Ireland's vital second leg World Cup match against France will after all be televised. The channel was involved in tight negotiations with the French Football Federation and broadcaster Sky, who were also bidding for rights to the game.
Wednesday's second leg of the World Cup play-off against France in Paris tomorrow night will decide if Ireland will go through to the world cup in South Africa next year.
RTÉ announced on Tuesday that it secured rights to cover the game and will broadcast the match on television, radio and online - within the Republic of Ireland.
It is understood that the broadcaster had offered €600,000 for the game, while Sky Television had kept their offer quiet.
It is further believed the French Football Federation were holding out for €1.5million, but it is as yet unknown whether Ireland's state broadcaster upped its bid.
Ireland are currently one nil down in tomorrow's tie, after a late goal by French striker Nicolas Anelka put the team behind on Saturday night.
The competitive battle saw tempers flare after Lassana Diarra and Keith Andrews became involved in a fracas after the game.
Diarra further inflamed the situation today after strongly rejected Giovanni Trapattoni's claim he had "insulted the Irish people" after the final whistle and went on to accuse Ireland of being sore losers, talking too much to the press, and trying to get French players booked.
RTÉ's Group Head of Sport Glen Killane said he was delighted with the news that the match will be broadcast.
