London Justice Talks Renewed

Northern Ireland's First and Deputy First Ministers will hold further talks with Gordon Brown in London today, aimed at breaking the continued deadlock over devolving policing and justice powers to the Stormont Assembly.

The two ministers will meet Mr Brown separately.

Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness (pictured) is expected to arrive at Downing Street over lunch time.

He and DUP leader Peter Robinson have already agreed a funding package, reportedly in the region of £1bn, to establish a new justice department in the province.

Last night, Stormont Executive Minister Conor Murphy said people "rightly expected there to have been further movement before now".

He accused the DUP of failing to make the "decisive step" and agree a date for transfer.

"This is unacceptable. Agreements reached in political negotiations need to be honoured," said Mr Murphy.

He said today's talks in London would focus on the issues of partnership and equality in government.

"And failure thus far to agree a date for transfer of policing and justice powers and more importantly we need to hear from both governments how they intend to deal with this."

Mr Robinson is expected to push for further reassurances over parades, and other issues, including the issuing of personal protection weapons to former security personnel.

He has insisted the powers cannot be transferred from Westminster until there is necessary community confidence.

The DUP leader has always voiced his support for installing the new department.
