Sensitive Laptops Stolen From Irish Revenue
A total of ten laptops, thought to contain sensitive information were stolen from the offices of the Irish Republic's Revenue Commissioner last night.
Gardaí in Dublin said today they are investigating the theft of the laptops from the Dublin based offices.
Detectives said they believe three men walked in to the offices on the Navan Road at around 7pm last night and took all ten laptops.
However, it has emerged that the Revenue Commissioners are operating strict procedures that mean all its laptops are encrypted.
Gardaí are examining the scene today with Revenue Officials. They are trying to determine if anything else was stolen and what information was on the laptops.
The practice of encryption has become standard practice at the Revenue Commission since a revuew by the Data Protection Commission, which recommended encryption for all laptops due to the sensitive nature of the information held there.
The Revenue Commission has over 1,200 laptops in use throughout the organisation with each assigned to a named individual on foot of a request from his/her local manager.
A register of all laptops is held within Revenue's 'Financials' database, and this register is currently being combed by investigating officers.

The SDLP has condemned the decision to close 10 tax offices in Northern Ireland. Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) plans to operate from one single facility in Belfast. Newry, Coleraine, Craigavon, Enniskillen, Lisburn and L'Derry will close between 2016 and 2021.

Men Tied Up In Maghera Robbery
Two men were tied up and bound during a robbery at a house in Maghera on Wednesday. A gang of men, one believed to be armed with a gun and a knife, entered a property in the Tobermore Road area at around 8.45pm. A 47-year-old man was tied up and a second man, aged 51, was also tied up when he arrived at the house a short time later.

Police are appealing for information after a number of laptops were stolen from a school in Co Antrim. The incident is believed to have happened overnight in the Rathcoole Drive area of Newtownabbey. Police received a report on Tuesday, 12 January, after staff noticed the laptops had gone missing.

One arrest in HMRC raid
A man has been arrested after HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) raided what is believed to be an illegal fuel laundering plant in Co Armagh. According to HMRC, the operation uncovered near Newtownhamilton had the capacity to produce 140,000 litres of laundered fuel per week, with an estimated annual revenue loss of almost £4.4 million.
