Red Arrows Withdrawal Doesn't Limit Airshow

It was all up in the air at the weekend as the Stormont Junior Minister Jonathan Bell attended the 10th anniversary Northern Ireland International Airshow.

Taking place above the picturesque setting of West Bay, Portrush, it was hailed as the biggest such show in Ireland, featuring its strongest line up ever of aerial acrobatics, sea displays and ground acts including Tornado jets and helicopter flights.

Despite missing the tragedy-hit Red Arrows - which had to withdraw to attend the funeral of their pilot killed in an earlier airshow crash - DUP Junior Minister Bell (pictured) was enthusiastic.

"In the past decade this event has grown from strength to strength and has continued to increase visitor appeal to the North Coast.

"From the thrilling aerial acts through to the fun entertainment on the ground there is something for all the family.

"I want to congratulate the organisers, Coleraine Borough Council, and supporting partners for making this event such a huge success," he said.

"Key tourism events, such as the International Airshow, not only play an important role in contributing to our economy by significantly increasing visitor numbers and spend, but also help to showcase Northern Ireland as a 'must see' destination."

The Junior Minister continued: "By hosting this spectacular Airshow Northern Ireland has again shown its expertise at hosting major events.

"As well as providing local people with a display of daring and dexterity the Airshow has attracted many overseas visitors; helping local businesses in these difficult times and proving that Northern Ireland is a truly exciting destination to visit."

As the event is supported by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, Susie McCullough Marketing and Events Director added: "We have witnessed this spectacular event grow in popularity over the years and we welcome that it has evolved its offering, responding to the needs and demands of its participants and spectators.

"The new attractions, such as the Vulcan Bomber which has only recently returned to the skies and the extensive ground entertainment is testament to this.

"It is of utmost importance that throughout tourism we are always striving to improve the visitor experience, provide reasons for them to return and encourage them to explore more of Northern Ireland."
