Fears grow for Calcast job losses

Union leaders fear that almost 100 jobs could be lost at Montupet-owned engineering firm Calcast Ltd at the firmís Londonderry factory.

Originally known as Transtec, the Campsie-based company had been placed in receivership when the French car components firm stepped in to save it in October of last year.

The deal, which also included the close involvement of the Ford Motor Company, saw Montupet iterate its commitment to a programme of both investment and input in the factory.

The move also meant the 300-strong workforce at Calcast swelled the overall numbers of people employed in the province by Montupet to almost 1,200.

However, it is thought the threatened job losses could be connected with the companyís slowing rate of profitability, following heavy investment by Montupet in three new product lines.

Established in France in 1894, Montupet has grown to become one of the leading manufacturers of aluminium casting for the automobile industry, specialising in the design and production of cylinder heads, engine blocks, rims and structure parts. (CL)
