Senior citizens set to benefit from free travel

Senior citizens who currently have to pay half fares on Northern Irelandís transport system will be able to obtain a concessionary pass that enables them to travel free of charge as of October 1 this year.

A two-month publicity campaign advertising the move has been organised by Translink and funded by the Department for Regional Development.

Regional Development Minister Gregory Campbell, who launched the publicity campaign, said: ďMany senior citizens already have a pass but we are encouraging those who have yet to get theirs, to apply in good time before the October start date. There will be advertisements in the press and information on the buses and trains explaining how to apply at local bus and railway stations.Ē

The pass, which can also be used to obtain a free travel concession on certain cross border bus and rail journeys, brings Northern Ireland into line with the Republic of Irelandís policy which automatically enables senior citizens to travel free of charge.

Concessionary passes can be obtained free of charge at Translink bus and railway stations on presentation of two passport-sized photographs, proof of age such as a medical card, passport or driving licence and proof of residency in Northern Ireland. (AMcE)
