McGuinness' Nephew Wounded In Derry

There has been another apparent 'punishment-style shooting', this time with two men shot in the legs in Londonderry.

One victim, Ruairi Canning, is the nephew of Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness, the Deputy First Minister at Stormont.

The Alliance Foyle representative Keith McGrellis has now condemned those behind the shooting of on Tuesday night.

He said that both men were shot in the leg in High Park in the Creggan Estate, and that they are in a stable condition in hospital. The other victim is so far unnamed.

The PSNI said the shooting took place in Creggan shortly after 7pm yesterday.

Keith McGrellis said: "I am shocked by these shootings. There is no justification for anyone carrying out such a vicious and barbaric crime.

"I hope the two men injured will be able to make a swift and full recovery.

"The people responsible for this attack must be brought to justice by the police and the courts, so I would urge anybody with any information about these shootings to contact the police."

Condemning the incident on BBC Radio, Ulster this morning, Sinn Fein MLA for Foyle Martina Anderson said the shooting had angered people in the city: "The PSNI is the only organisation that should be investigating and dealing with these matters," she said.

"The people of Derry support the Peace Process and the people who carried out that attack last night are out of touch with the mood and the views of the vast majority of the people."
