SF Calls For Timeline On Pilot Search Scanners |
|
Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has called on the Justice Minister to produce a timeline on when the pilot for the ‘full body imaging scanners’ would take place.
The Vice Chair of the Assembly's Justice Committee was commenting after Justice Minister David Forde said in the Assembly that the pilot scheme would be initiated but did not give a date.
Mr McCartney said: "We welcome the fact that the Minister has had this review carried out and that he intends to initiate a pilot into replacing the use of strip searching.
"However David Ford did not give a date for when this pilot will be implemented and that is something he needs to do. The sooner there is movement away from the unnecessary and humiliating practice of strip searching, the better.
"Sinn Féin had pressed the Minister for some time now to look at other security systems in place both in gaols in the rest of Ireland and in Britain."
