Man Jailed For 1990 Rape |
|
A man has been jailed for 12 years for a stranger rape and burglary dating back nearly 22 years.
Milton White, 46 years (22.2.66), of Ellison House, Albany Road SE5 attacked the 60-year-old victim in her own home, after breaking into the north London property in the early hours of 14 May 1990.
"I am pleased with today’s result and the hard work of those involved in bringing White to justice."
The victim woke up to discover White in her bedroom - she challenged him, but he placed his hand over her mouth and raped her.
Earlier that evening the victim had been to a casino in the Mayfair area and had won in the region of £1,500. Following the attack White rifled through her clothes, making off with £1,200 of her winnings. After he left, the victim raised the alarm with neighbours and police were contacted.
Extensive enquiries at the time failed to identify the suspect, however following a review of this case by the Cold Case Sapphire Team, a DNA match to White was achieved. Additionally, a fingerprint review established that a palm mark attributed to the defendant was also present.
On 15 November 2011 White was arrested at Southwark Police Station on suspicion of rape. He made no reply and was taken to Walworth Police Station where he was fingerprinted and his DNA was taken. In interview he was asked numerous questions in relation to the allegation but replied no comment on all occasions.
He was subsequently charged with rape and burglary of a dwelling and was remanded in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on 16 November.
He was sentenced today, Thursday 29 March, at the Old Bailey to 12 years for the rape and four for the burglary - both to run concurrent.
The victim, who would have been 82 years, sadly died in 2006.
DC Andy Beete from the Cold Case Team said: "I am pleased with today’s result and would like to highlight the hard work of all those involved in bringing White to justice. It is deeply sad that the victim is no longer with us, but I hope her family are able to take some comfort in today’s result."
