Funding Of £150,000 For Revitalisation Of Dromore Town Centre

Minister for Social Development Nelson McCausland today announced funding of £150,000 for a revitalisation project based in Dromore town centre.

The Dromore Revitalisation Project will enhance and complement work already completed and aims to improve the poor quality environment created by boarded up vacant properties and sites. This in turn will strengthen and improve existing retail provision and promote Dromore as a tourist destination to attract visitors and investors.

Mr McCausland said: "Dromore is a town with great potential, but like many other towns and cities, it faces a struggle to remain vital and viable in the current economic climate. I am therefore very pleased to announce funding to help revitalise the town centre and enhance the commercial core to benefit businesses, retailers, residents and visitors alike.

"I am encouraged by the commitment of Banbridge District Council, Dromore Chamber of Commerce and Dromore Partnership in their efforts to work with local businesses to regenerate Dromore town centre and I anticipate that this funding will prove beneficial to their aims."

Catriona Regan, Director of Development, Banbridge District Council said: "Prior to applying for funding we carried out an extensive consultation process with the Dromore retailers and shoppers to assess their needs, the main concern of both groups was the issue of derelict and vacant units in the town centre. This funding will be used to directly improve the areas of greatest concern through shop front improvement and building frontage enhancement. Experience across the UK has shown that by improving the visual impact of a town centre, investment increases. The council is pleased that the Department for Social Development is supporting the project and we are keen to start work so that the people of Dromore can start to see the benefits of this investment."
