NI Cancer Deaths Continue To Rise |
|
The number of cancer deaths continues to increase in NI and reached a new high of 4,100 deaths last year, according to statistics released by the Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
4,000 people died of circulatory diseases and 1,900 from respiratory diseases.
Together, the diseases account for 70% of all deaths.
However, last year the number of deaths was 14,200, the lowest number ever recorded.
Commenting on the figures Dr David Marshall from NISRA said: "These latest statistics show continuing improvements in mortality. Last year the infant death rate reached a new low and we also saw the lowest number of deaths ever. The overall fall in mortality is notable given the population continues to increase in number and get older. However a consequence of the ageing population is the increasing number of deaths due to cancer and Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias."
