Political Leaders Put Pressure On Cardinal To Resign |
|
Cardinal Seán Brady is facing further calls for his resignation from political leaders after he failed to pass on information about paedophile priest Brendan Smyth.
It follows allegations made in a BBC This World documentary.
Tanaiste Eamonn Gilmore is also putting pressure for the Cardinal to stand down.
Mr Gilmore said: "It is my personal view that anybody who did not deal with the scale of the abuse that we have seen in this case should not hold a position of authority,"
Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has also accused Cardinal Brady of "failing spectacularly to protect children".
Mr Quinn said this stance was appropriate because Cardinal Brady is the head of the Catholic Church in Ireland, which is the patron of 92pc of the 3,200 primary schools.
