East Belfast Robbery Highlights Knife Crime Culture |
|
The DUP's East Belfast MLA Robin Newton has condemned a robbery at the weekend on the Woodstock Road.
The MLA said the use of a knife in the robbery highlighted the prevalent nature of knife crime in Northern Ireland.
Commenting Mr Newton said: "The use of a butcher's knife in this robbery demonstrates the seriousness of the crime and tragedy which could have unfolded had any type of altercation arose.
"However, any development of a knife crime culture in Northern Ireland is deeply worrying. Knives pose a risk to society which even greater than that presented by guns. The issue is complicated as knives are used everyday in workplaces and in the home.
"Following the horrific murder of Thomas Devlin in 2005, there was a coordinated and strong campaign against knife crime. It is vital that we do not allow this issue to drop from our attention.
"I appeal to the young people in our society to think twice and not to carry dangerous weapons. There should be a continuous educational programme running in schools, on television and online in order to teach young people about the dangers and consequences of carrying knives."
