Pipe Band Championships In Belfast |
|
The Euro 2012 football tournament may be over, but another European compeition is on its way - Belfast is hosting the European Pipe Band Championships later this month.
This will be the third year that the event has taken place at the Stormont estate, with more than 120 bands from all over the British Isles and Europe competing for the top honours on Saturday 28 July.
All-Ireland, European and World Champions, the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band, once again are expected to face stiff competition in the Grade One competiton from former European and World Champions St. Laurence O’Toole.
The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Gavin Robinson, who will be acting as Chieftain at the event said: "It is a great occasion for all and looks like being a really exciting day especially for the local bands. Piping has a great following in Ireland and across the world cutting across a lot of traditions and it is great to see everyone putting their all into the competition."
Organisers have kept the 2011 admission prices: £5 for adults and £3 for 5-16 year olds, students and seniors. Family tickets for two adults and two concessions cost £14, payable in cash on the day. Limited camper van parking spaces are available on both Friday and Saturday evenings, for £20 (which includes free admission to the event).
As well as the piping, there will be competitions for Drum Majors and Highland dancers to showcase their skills. Entries are still open for the Highland Dance competition: anyone interested in taking part should contact the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association on 0141 221 5414.
