Grieving Antrim Parents Stopped From Leaving Grave Tributes
A UUP councillor in Antrim is "shocked" at the "devastating" decision to ban parents from leaving mementoes on their children's graves in the town.
The Pregnancy Loss and Paediatric Bereavement Team from the Northern Health and Social Care Trust have said they will remove mementos like teddy bears and candles from graves in order to keep the babies' communal plot looking tidy and allow them to re-open and maintain the graves.
As of August 31, 2011, the Trust will dispose of anything except flowers on the graves, and flowers will be taken off every two months.
Former Antrim mayor Paul Michael of the UUP, who lost his baby son at birth, told the Antrim Guardian: "Leaving mementoes for a much loved and missed child is an expression of grief for a family. To not be allowed to do that will be devastating."
