Two Arrested Following Banbridge Trouble

A 21-year-old and a 15-year-old have been charged following trouble in Banbridge last night.

About 30 youths attacked police and firefighters with bricks, stones and bottles after the emergency services were called to a burning barricade that had been placed across the Scarva Road.

Police have condemned the trouble, which occurred between 10pm and midnight yesterday.

It is believed no-one was injured.

The two people who were arrested are due in court later this month on public order offences.

Inspector Jacqui Gillespie said: "I am extremely disappointed at the actions of a few mindless people who were intent on causing disruption and damage last night.

"Their actions do not reflect the peaceful society we in Banbridge know and want.

"My officers are continuing their investigations into the disorder. Arrests have been made and I believe further will follow.

"I can assure the local community we will not falter in our efforts to ensure that those responsible will be brought to justice".

Ulster Unionist Jo-Anne Dobson, who is an MLA for the area, said the people of Banbridge were "appalled".

She said: "Violence against the fire and rescue services and the PSNI smacks of 'mob mentality' and also puts the lives of innocent members of the public in danger by tying up vital services in one area, thus reducing their capacity to respond to other incidents.

"The jobs performed by the emergency services are dangerous enough without having to confront the mindless thuggery which occurred on this occasion."
