Sir Ian McKellen Awarded UU Honorary Degree
Sir Ian McKellen is set to receive an honorary degree from the University of Ulster.
The announcement follows news that the actor will deliver the chancellor’s annual lecture at the university’s Magee campus in L’Derry in February.
His address will follow speakers including Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
Sir Ian is perhaps most known for his roles in recent blockbusters such as the X-Men films and Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy. He will also play Gandalf In the upcoming Hobbit prequel.
But the 74-year-old is also known for his many Shakespeare roles; notably as the lead in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Macbeth alongside Dame Judi Dench in 1979.
University pro-vice chancellor Professor Deidre Heenan said: "The university is delighted to recognise an actor of Sir Ian's standing with an honorary doctorate and that he has also agreed to deliver next year's chancellor's lecture.
"It is also wonderful for Derry-Londonderry as the 2013 City of Culture that this event is also coming for the first time to Magee and it will no doubt be a highlight for the city and for the university."
