Belfast To Mark Titanic 101 Anniversary
Belfast will formally mark the 101st anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on April 15.
Beginning at midday, the ceremony will remember the people – 28 of whom were from Belfast – who died in 1912 when the famous ship sank after striking an iceberg.
The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Gavin Robinson, will join John Andrews, President of the Belfast Titanic Society, to lay wreaths at the Titanic Memorial in the City Hall grounds.
A minute silence will then be observed and prayers will be said.
On board the Titanic were nine men from the Harland and Wolff Guarantee Group, led by the ship`s designer, Thomas Andrews. They were travelling to address any problems which may have arisen on the ship`s maiden voyage to New York.
All nine men, along with 1,500 others, lost their lives on the night of 15 April 1912.
The service also will remember six other men – J Blaney, John Harper, James Heslim, Thomas Morrow, James McGrady and W Swann – whose names were not known when the memorial was commissioned and so are missing from it.
The memorial, which depicts the female figure of 'Thane' looking down on two sea-nymphs rising from the waves with the body a drowned seaman in their arms, was first unveiled in June 1920, having been paid for by public subscription.
It was originally situated in Donegall Square North, but was moved to its present location on the eastern side of the City Hall grounds in March 1960.
A new Titanic Memorial Garden was opened last year to mark the centenary of the disaster.

A series of events were held over the weekend to commemorate the 1,500 men, women and children who lost their lives when the Titanic sank on 15 April 1912. To mark the centenary of the sinking a service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving for the Titanic was held in St Anne’s Cathedral and a Requiem Mass was held in St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast.

It is now just 100 days until the official opening of Titanic Belfast, the world’s largest Titanic visitor attraction. Work on the internal fit-out of the iconic six-floor building in Titanic Quarter, Northern Ireland’s largest ever tourism project, is ahead of schedule and will be completed ahead of the official opening on 31st March, 2012.

The City of Belfast is again preparing to commemorate and celebrate the world's most famous ocean liner, the RMS Titanic. The ninth annual 'Titanic Made in Belfast' festival - organised by Belfast City Council - begins this Saturday, and continues until Sunday 11 April, with tickets for various events now available at the Belfast Welcome Centre.
