Rescue dog's quarantine decision criticised

The decision to quarantine a Northern Ireland sniffer dog used in last week's Algerian earthquake has been criticised by the dog's handler.

Charco, a black Labrador, will be quarantined due to British law for a period of six months because of the fear of rabies.

The dog's owner, Neil Powell criticised the move claiming it could hamper rescue attempts in the UK if a terror strike took place in the coming months. At present seven of the nine fully trained sniffer dogs would be out of action because of the law.

While Mr Powell claimed that the risk of sniffer dogs carrying the rabies virus was "tiny", the Department for Environment Farming and Rural Affairs said it sympathised with his plight, but said no exception could be made.

Charco, and his owner Neil went to Algeria last week to help in the rescue effort following an earthquake which has killed more than 2,000 people and injured 9,000 others.

Last week's earthquake had a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale.
