Police Appeal Following Serious Attack

Police in Paignton are appealing for information following a serious assault in the town.

The incident took place outside the Park Hotel between 12.30am and 1am on Thursday, 13 March.

A 52-year-old man sustained a significant head injury after being assaulted by two men and he remains in Torbay District Hospital.

Two men aged 37 and 24 years were arrested in connection with the incident and later released on Police bail until 9 May 2014.

Chief Fire Officer Charged With Rape

Derbyshire's chief fire officer Dean Frayne, 47, from Etwall, Derby, has been charged with raping a woman.

The 74-year-old was arrested in February accused of raping a woman in 2006, according to police.

The fire officer who has been in service since 1997 is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on 31 March.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement that deputy chief fire officer Andy Waldie and deputy chief executive Joy Smith will cover Frayne's responsibilities at first.

Eric Cantona Arrested On Suspicion Of Assault

The former Manchester United footballer Eric Cantona has been arrested in north London over assault reports.

According to the Metropolitan Police a man in his mid-40s was arrested and taken into custody.

The victim did not require medical assistance at the scene.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Chief Fire Officer Resigns Over Child Porn Arrest
A top fire officer for the West Midlands Fire Service has resigned after he was arrested on suspicion of making indecent images of children. West Midlands Police arrested Frank Sheehan, 55, yesterday at his home in Sutton Coldfield.
