Britain Command Of Afghanistan's Helmand Hand Over US
Britain's military operations command in the Afghan province of Helmand has been formally handed over to the US, in the latest step to recall British combat troops since it started operations in the area in October 2001.
The UK’s withdrawal is due to be completed by the end of this year, with the remaining forces set to become part of the US-led Regional Command (South West).
Britain's peak of more than 10,000 soldiers in Helmand has now been reduced to about a half, as the Afghan national forces begin to increase their role in the handling of the country's defence.
Last month the Minister of Defence announced the closure and handover of three front line bases in the region.

Soldier Dies In Southern Afghanistan
A British soldier has been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said. The serviceman from the 2nd Battalion the Mercian Regiment was on an operation near Garmsir in Helmand Province, and next of kin have been informed.

Tragedy As Afghanistan Command Changes
As news of the latest fatality in the troubled country emerged last Friday, the overall command in Afghanistan has changed. Task Force Helmand is now under the control of a new Army brigade, 16 Air Assault Brigade, which formally took over as the lead formation from 4th Mechanized Brigade.

Two British servicemen have been killed by an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed. The pair - one from 29 Command Regiment Royal Artillery and a marine from 45 Commando Royal Marines - were killed by an explosion in Helmand Province.

MoD Introduces Increased Compensation For Injured Personnel
Compensation payments for the most serious injuries have been doubled to a new maximum lump sum of £570,000 today. All injured personnel who have received an award under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme will receive an increase of between 10 and 100% to their tax-free lump sum payment.

More British Troops To Be Deployed To Afghanistan
An additional 300 British troops are soon to be bound for Afghanistan. The news will be confirmed later today after Prime Minister Gordon Brown revealed the deployment, with Defence Secretary Des Browne due to give details in the Commons at 3.30pm.
