Two More Arrests In Disappeared Case

Two more people have been arrested in relation to an investigation into the 1972 abduction and murder of Jean McConville.

On Thursday, police said two women, aged 57 and 60, had been arrested.

They were arrested in the Greater Belfast area this morning (17 April) and have been taken to Antrim police station for questioning.

No further details have been released.

The arrests come after detectives confirmed another woman who was arrested yesterday in connection with the investigation had been released, pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).

Last month, 77-year-old Ivor Bell, a leader in the Provisional IRA in the 1970s was charged in connection with the murder. He was charged with aiding and abetting murder, as well as membership of the IRA. While earlier this month, another woman, also aged 57, and a 56-year-old man were arrested separately as part of the investigation. Both were released after questioning.

It is understood the man was released without charge.

Police are preparing a report on the woman for assessment by the PPS.

Mrs McConville was kidnapped from her flat by the IRA in December 1972, murdered and secretly buried. Her body was not recovered until 35 years later, at a beach in Co Louth.
