Pilot ICT Apprenticeship Scheme Launched

A pilot information and communications technologies (ICT) apprenticeship scheme has been launched by Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry.

The scheme, involving government and a number of local ICT employers, will see individuals recruited as apprentices and taking up various software development roles in companies in the North West.

The successful applicants also avail of an intensive "boot camp" to enhance their skills, confidence and productivity for their host companies.

Minister Farry said: "I recently launched a 'Skills to Succeed' campaign which highlights the importance of skills and qualifications for individuals, employers and the economy.

"The ICT sector is of critical importance to the growth of Northern Ireland and if we are to realise the sector's full potential, it is clear that more needs to be done to improve the match between the skills of those people in the workforce and the skills our employers need to help our companies grow."

The pilot is based on the successful Belfast area Public/Private ICT Apprenticeship scheme, which has seen 74 apprentices employed in the local ICT industry throughout a number of private sector companies and the public sector.

Minister Farry continued: "Building on the success of similar schemes, and the high quality of apprentices recruited, I believe we can offer industry an important alternative pathway to recruit passionate and talented individuals into the local IT industry."

For more information and how to apply please go to NI Direct. Applications must be received before 5:00pm on Thursday 8th May 2014.

Participating companies include: CASI Ltd, Alleycats, 360 productions, Bluebox/NWE Wireless, Seagate, EV-U Solutions and the North West Regional College
