Down High Prep To Close

The Preparatory Department of Down High School in Downpatrick is to close, following declining enrolment numbers.

Education Minister John O'Dowd approved the proposal to close the department.

Enrolments at Down High have declined in recent years with only 32 pupils currently enrolled in P1-P7, plus four pupils in the reception class.

As a result of this, the South Eastern Education and Library Board (SEELB) brought forward a proposal to close the Preparatory Department from 31 August 2015.

Commenting on the decision, John O’Dowd said: "I would like to wish the P7 pupils well for the future as they transfer to their new post-primary schools in September and the current P6 pupils who transfer in September 2015.

"I am confident that all those involved, including parents and school staff, will ensure as smooth a transition as possible for the remaining children."
