Junior Minister Joins FGM Campaign

Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has announced her support for a UK-wide campaign to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and child, early and forced marriage (CEFM).

The Minister made the announcement after attending the first 'Girl Summit' held in London yesterday.

"These practices are truly horrific and I want to support efforts to bring them to an end," she said. "They rob girls and women of their freedom, identity and potential in the most dangerous, brutal and cruel manner, with devastating physical and psychological consequences. I attended this conference to show solidarity with the girls and women affected by these terrible actions.

"Through the Gender Equality Strategy we are committed to promoting and protecting the rights of girls and boys and to eliminate gender based violence from society. Girls and women across the world have the right to expect the same freedom from fear of coercion, prejudice and violence."
