NI Landfill Waste At All-Time Low
The amount of waste going to landfill in Northern Ireland is at an all-time low, according to figures released by the Department of the Environment.
The tonnage of Local Authority Collected (LAC) municipal waste going to landfill fell to 103,262 during January - March 2014, indicating a drop of neatly 2% on the same quarter in 2013, when 105,290 tonnes were landfilled.
Household waste landfilled and recycled/composted showed similar trends. The total tonnage of household waste sent to landfill over the period was 90,070 tonnes, down over 2% compared with last year (92,391 tonnes). 37% of household waste was recycled or composted, indicating an increase of 1% on the same period in 2013.
In total 62,641 tonnes of biodegradable LAC municipal waste were sent to landfill during the quarter, indicating a 2.2% drop on the same quarter last year (64,082 tonnes).
This equated to 20.5% of the annual allocation. To date, between April 2013 and March 2014, 82.5% of the annual allocation has been used.

£132k To Prevent Food Waste In L'Derry

Record fine imposed for illegal landfill site
The highest fine ever imposed in Northern Ireland for an environmental offence has been levied against an illegal landfill site located in Co. Down. Fines totalling £22,000 have been imposed on Neil Rooney, the operator of an illegal landfill site at Ballytrustan Road in Downpatrick.
