Robinson Attends Commonwealth Opening Ceremony

First Minister Peter Robinson has attended the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Mr Robinson attended as Northern Ireland revealed it sent 117 athletes to this year's competition, its largest team in the history of the Games.

He said: "I am delighted to attend the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games to show support to Northern Ireland’s local athletes in Team NI.

"We have 117 athletes competing, which is the largest team Northern Ireland has ever taken to a Commonwealth Games. This is a real credit to the sheer grit and determination of the athletes who dedicate their lives to their sport. I commend them along their coaches and families who have worked so hard to qualify for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"The Northern Ireland Executive, through DCAL and Sport NI, is committed to supporting our local athletes and recognises the value and importance of sport through the Sport Matters strategy."
