First Commonwealth Games Medal For NI

Lisa Kearney has claimed Northern Ireland's first medal of the Commonwealth Games.

Kearney, who is from Belfast, took bronze in Judo.

Congratulating the young athlete, Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said: "Lisa is the first local athlete to win a medal, and I am pleased that she has taken bronze in the 52kg category. It is a fantastic achievement for a Belfast sportswoman who has proven herself among the best martial artists in the world.

"It has been an action packed opening day at the Commonwealth Games, and I congratulate all the athletes who have taken part in the games so far. I also wish every success to those getting ready to compete."

£90,000 Improvement Scheme For Sion Mills

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has confirmed a £90,000 carriageway improvement scheme on the B165 Bellspark Road at Sion Mills is to get underway.

The project will commence on 29 July and will improve the corner located approximately 700 metres from the A5 Melmount Road junction. Work is expected to be substantially completed by mid-September. For the duration of the works, a traffic control system will be in place from 28 July until 20 September.

Minister Kennedy said: "This scheme will greatly improve the road safety for all users by widening the carriageway and grass verges to improve the forward sight distance on this stretch of road."

Woman Airlifted To Hospital

A 21-year-old woman has been airlifted to hospital following a search and rescue operation in Ballycastle.

At around 2am, there were reports of a woman in distress in the Fairhead area of the town. The PSNI, Coastguard and the Portrush RNLI lifeboat were dispatched. The woman was later rescued from the Churchfield Road area before being airlifted to Coleraine Hospital for treatment.

A spokesperson for the PSNI has confirmed the woman is in a stable condition in hospital.

Number Of Roads Remain Closed Following Storm Ali
A number of roads remain closed across Northern Ireland following the damage caused by Storm Ali. The following roads are still closed, however the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) is working to clear the obstructions along with its multiagency partners.
