Raiders Attack Police With Sledgehammer In Foiled Cash Machine Robbery

A police officer has been treated in hospital after being attacked with a sledgehammer.

Police say that the 41-year-old officer was responding to a report of a cash machine robbery at a Tesco Express store in Sandwell.

It is understood that one of three masked men smashed the window of the officers patrol car, hitting the officer in the head and arm.

He suffered multiple cuts, bruising and severe swelling to his face and arm, police said.

The men fled the scene in a dark-coloured car, thought to be an Audi A6. Police say that as the car left the boot was opened. They have asked that anyone who may have witnessed the car fleeing the scene to contact them.
