King's Lynn Flood Defence Refurbishment Underway

Work to strengthen tidal flood defences in King's Lynn, Norfolk, has gotten underway.

The Environment Agency and Team Van Oord will carry out the works, which will see 50 flood gates being refurbished, re-pointed and repaired, in order to "provide a good standard of defence".

The King's Lynn Tidal Defence project will cost an estimated £1 million, restoring the existing tidal defences, which were constructed about 30 years ago, to their optimum condition.

Sir Donal Sinden Dies Aged 90

Sir Donald Sinden has died aged 90.

The Shakespearean actor who appeared in more than 70 film and TV productions, is said to have been suffering from prostate cancer for several years, and died at his home in Kent.

Sir Donald's family described his death as a "huge loss" and asked for their privacy to be respected.

He was appointed a CBE in 1979 and then knighted in 1997 for his services to drama.

Bread Actor To Stand For Conservative Party In Clacton

Actor Giles Watling, best known for his role in 1980s sitcom Bread, is to stand as the Conservative party candidate in the Clacton by-election on 09 October.

Mr Watling was chosen over fellow local councillor Sue Lissimore.

The by-election is to be held in October following the defection MP Douglas Carswell from the Conservatives to UKIP.

NAO Say Govt Flood Defence Spending 'Insufficient'
The National Audit Office (NAO) has warned that the UK's flood defences are likely to "deteriorate faster" as the money being spent on maintaining them is "insufficient". A report from the NAO claims that half of the country's defences received a "minimal level" of maintenance which was insufficient to secure homes.

Severe Weather Causes Chaos Across UK
Much of the UK has been warned to expect a risk of gale-force winds and flooding as a storm sweeps the country. Travel disruption is also expected. It is thought the worst affected will be Scotland, where winds of up to 100mph have already hit, with the north and east of England also affected.

ScottishPower Plan Major Tidal Stream Projects
ScottishPower Renewables today confirmed they are evaluating three separate coastal sites for the development of the world's largest tidal stream projects. Two of the sites are being planned in Scotland, in the Pentland Firth and the Sound of Islay, with the third off the North Antrim coast in Northern Ireland.
