EU Rules To Prevent 'Horsemeat Scandal' Repeat - SF

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said that new EU rules have been introduced to eliminate any repeat of last year's horsemeat scandal.

A Commission proposal to revise the rules for the identification of horses was endorsed yesterday by EU Member States' experts.

"This revised Regulation provides a more reliable and safer European system for the registration and identification of horses in the EU," she said.

"One of the basic aims is to prevent the inadvertent or fraudulent slaughter for human consumption of horses which must be excluded from the food chain.

"We have to enhance the safeguards which prevent fraudsters from damaging the excellent reputation of our food change by placing non-food quality horse meat on our plates."
