Body Found In Alice Gross Inquiry
Police investigating the disappearance of Alice Gross have confirmed a body has been found in a river in west London.
The investigation is now being treated as a murder inquiry, they added.
In a statement, detectives said the family of the teenager had been informed of the development.
Formal identification is yet to take place. A post-mortem examination is also due to be carried out.
The discovery was made on Tuesday evening and police said "significant efforts" had been made to conceal the body.
Commander Graham McNulty said: "This is obviously a significant development and Alice's family has been informed.
"We are unable to make a formal identification at this stage, but clearly this news is devastating for everyone involved in the search for Alice.
"At this time my thoughts are with Alice's family and friends. I would ask you to respect their privacy and allow them space."
He added: "This is now a murder investigation and I need the public's help to find whoever is responsible.
"I would urge anyone who may know something to come forward. Even if you have not yet spoken out it is not too late to tell us what you know."
Arnis Zalkalns, 41, who is from Latvia and is a convicted murderer, remains the prime suspect.
He was captured on CCTV footage cycling along the Grand Union Canal 15 minutes after Alice had walked along the same route, on 28 August.
It is the last known sighting of the 14-year-old.
Mr Zalkalns has been missing from his home in Ealing since 3 September.

A post-mortem is to be carried out today on the body of a man who is believed to have murdered school girl Alice Gross. It is understood Latvian builder Arnis Zalkalns was found hanged in woods at Boston Manor Park on Saturday. The body is scheduled for a post-mortem at Fulham Mortuary this afternoon.

A rucksack belonging to a girl, 14, who has been missing for a week has been discovered beside the River Brent in west London. Alice Gross from Hanwell was last seen on Thursday, 28 August. CCTV footage shows her walking along the Grand Union Canal tow path at Brentford Lock. She was later filmed walking towards her house at 3.45pm.
