Health Report Calls For Smoking Ban In London Parks
The Health Commission has called for smoking to be banned in various public spaces across London, including Trafalgar and Parliament squares.
It is one of a number of proposals being put forward by the commission, which include Oyster card discounts for commuters who walk part of the way to work, and a ban on junk food shops near schools.
In the commission's latest report, Better Health London, author Lord Ara Darzi - former health minister and cancer surgeon – claims that half of all adults in London are obese or overweight, with the city having more of both than New York, Sydney, Sao Paolo, Madrid, Toronto and Paris.
Regarding smokers the report claims that around 1.2m Londoners smoke, and that 67 school children start smoking every day.
To implement the proposed smoking ban, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson would have to use by-law powers and exert influence on the on the Royal Parks, the board of which Mr Johnson appoints.
Local councils could then also use by-laws to implement their own bans.
The possible ban has been described as "outrageous" by smokers group, Forest.

Government to introduce partial smoking ban
The government has announced plans to introduce a partial smoking ban, following reports of a Cabinet row over the proposals. The plans, introduced as part of the Health Improvement Bill, will see smoking banned in all public places in England, but there will be exemptions for pubs, which do not serve food and private members clubs.

Smoking ban 'deters smokers'
The threat of a smoking ban being introduced is encouraging smokers to give up the habit, a survey has suggested. Research conducted on behalf of Cancer Research UK found that a fifth of doctors reported an increase in patients seeking advice to help quit smoking since MPs voted in favor of a total ban in England last month.
