£29.5m Belfast Waterfront Extension Begins

Work has begun on a £29.5m extension to Belfast's Waterfront concert venue.

The expansion will double the Waterfront’s existing conference and exhibition space. Belfast City Council is providing £11m towards the expansion, with £14.4m funding from the EU Sustainable Competitiveness Programme and £4.1 million from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

Construction work is scheduled to be completed in December 2015, with the new facilities opening in spring 2016.

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Nichola Mallon, said: "These new facilities will put us on the international map, enabling the Waterfront to attract 50,000 conference delegates each year - twice the current number.

"Belfast has many strengths as a business tourism destination - a superb location, great transport links and, of course, the warmth of our welcome. Increasing our appeal to this market will bring an additional £45m into our economy each year and provide a welcome boost for our hospitality, retail and tourism trades."

Councillor Lee Reynolds, Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, added: "Over the next 18 months, this project will create 220 construction jobs and 29 full-time posts, in addition to our existing staff, whose hard work and dedication has already made Belfast Waterfront an award-winning conference venue of choice."
