Convicted Rapist Ched Evans Released From Prison

Convicted rapist and former Sheffield United footballer Ched Evans has left prison after serving two and half years of a five year sentence.

Evans, 25, was convicted in April 2012 for the rape of a 19-year-old woman in a hotel in May 2011.

According to reports, Evans left Wymott Prison in Lancashire at about 05:30 on Friday morning.

Evans has denied the charge and has always maintained his innocence. It is understood that he is due to make a "very personal and profound" statement on his website next week.

Amid rumours that Evans could potentially return to play for Sheffield United, an online petition urging the club not to take him back has received more than 150,000 signatures.

Oldham are believed to be signing the 26-year-old, despite a petition with more than 60,000 signatures against the decision. A petition calling on Sheffield United to not re-employ convicted rapist Ched Evans has received over 60,000 signatures. The 25-year-old footballer was jailed for five years in April 2012 after being convicted of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room in Rhyl, north Wales. He is due to be released on October.
